AI Card Grading: Complete Guide 2026 — How It Works, Accuracy, Best Apps
Everything about AI card grading in 2026. How accurate is it? Which app is best? Can AI replace PSA? Answers based on 2,000+ grade predictions generated through the platform.
AI card grading uses computer vision to predict your card's PSA grade from a photo in about 35 seconds. Here is everything you need to know — how it works, how accurate it is, which apps to use, and how to apply it before PSA submission.
CardGrading.app has graded 2,000+ cards submitted by 1,000+ collectors. This guide is based on that dataset. We will tell you when another app does something better.
What Is AI Card Grading?
AI card grading is software that evaluates a trading card's condition from a photograph. It analyzes the same four criteria professional graders use: centering, corners, edges, and surface. The output is a predicted grade on the PSA 1–10 scale, with sub-grade breakdowns for each category.
The process takes about 35 seconds, costs $1.00–$2.00 per card with a one-time pack, and requires only a smartphone photo. Its primary use is as a pre-screening tool before PSA or BGS submission.
How Accurate Is AI Card Grading?
Accuracy varies significantly by sub-category:
| Sub-Category | AI Accuracy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Centering | High | Visual estimate from the photo — not yet validated against PSA returns |
| Corners | Medium-High | Pattern recognition on visible wear; misses hairline fray at low resolution |
| Edges | Medium-High | Chipping visible in photos; micro-chips at resolution limits may be missed |
| Surface | Medium | Main gap: foil scratches only visible under angled light, not in flat overhead photo |
Overall: of the 481 Pokémon cards in our dataset that carry a market price at their predicted grade, 37% show a positive predicted financial return after a $25 PSA fee — 61% of cards worth $50 or more raw, versus 14% under $50 (this uses the predicted grade, not verified PSA-return outcomes — we don't yet have a published prediction-vs-actual validation rate).
AI grading is useful as a pre-screen. It is not a replacement for physical grading.
What Is the Best AI Card Grading App?
| App | Best For | Free Tier | Accuracy Data |

| CardMintAI | Unlimited free grading | Unlimited | No published PSA-return verification dataset |
Can AI Replace PSA Grading?
No. PSA provides three things AI cannot:
- Authentication — PSA verifies the card is genuine. AI evaluates condition only.
- Physical certification — A PSA slab is a collectible item in its own right. An AI prediction is a number on a screen.
- Resale premium — PSA-graded cards command market premiums that ungraded cards — with or without an AI grade — do not receive.
The correct relationship between AI grading and PSA: AI is the filter you use before PSA to decide which cards are worth submitting.
How to Use AI Grading Before PSA Submission
- Photograph your cards flat, under even light. For foil cards (holographic and reverse-holo Pokemon), also photograph at 30–45 degrees under a lamp to reveal surface scratches.
- Upload to an AI grading app. The result shows predicted PSA grade + sub-grades, including a centering score.
- Apply the centering filter first. PSA 10 requires 60/40 centering or better. Any card that measures worse than 60/40 — skip the submission fee. A low AI centering score is your cue to measure.
- Check the PSA 10 vs. raw price gap. For cards where that gap is larger than the PSA fee ($19–$35), submitting a strong AI grade is worth it. For cards where the gap is small, hold raw.
- Submit the filtered set to PSA. Collectors who pre-screen this way consistently report better average grade outcomes on their submissions.
How Does AI Assess Centering?
Centering itself is geometric: it compares border widths on opposite sides. Here is how the ratio is defined:
- Horizontal centering: left border width ÷ total horizontal border width = left percentage. Example: 55/45 means left border is 55% of total.
- Vertical centering: top border width ÷ total vertical border width = top percentage.
PSA's published centering standards: 60/40 or better (both axes) for PSA 10 on most modern cards. 65/35 or better for PSA 9. CardGrading.app's AI does not report these ratios: it assesses centering visually from your photo and gives a centering score out of 10 — an estimate, not a measured ratio. A low score tells you which cards to measure; a card that measures 67/33 is very unlikely to pass PSA 10, and you can rule it out without spending the fee to confirm.
What Cards Does AI Grading Work For?
CardGrading.app grades Pokémon, baseball, football and basketball cards:
- Pokemon: Base Set through Scarlet & Violet (built for English cards; Japanese cards may not identify or price reliably)
- Baseball, football and basketball: a grade estimate plus market figures from completed sales of that exact card and version when our market data has them. Sports cards are in beta: grades aren't yet checked against PSA-graded cards.
- Hockey, soccer and other sports: not supported. One scanned today gets a condition read only, and it still uses a grade.
- Other TCGs: not supported (Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and other games)
The four grading criteria (centering, corners, edges, surface) are the same ones professional graders apply to every card type. CardGrading.app grades Pokémon, baseball, football and basketball cards; it does not support other cards: one scanned today gets a condition read only, and it still uses a grade.
