Should I Grade My Pokemon Card?

Grading costs $25 to $50 per card at PSA, BGS, or CGC. For grading to make financial sense, the PSA 10 value needs to be at least 2x the raw price to break even after fees. Browse the set guides below to find the exact math for your card.

The Math Behind Grading

The break-even rule

PSA Value tier costs $25 per card. PSA Regular is $50. To break even, you need the PSA 10 value to exceed the raw price plus the fee. To profit, you want the PSA 10 value to be at least 2x the raw price so there is margin after fees and the risk of getting a 9 instead of a 10.

Why the 2x rule matters

Not every card you submit will get a 10. A PSA 9 is typically worth only 20 to 40 percent more than raw. If there is a 50 percent chance of getting a 9, you need the PSA 10 premium to be large enough to justify the risk. The 2x multiplier threshold accounts for this uncertainty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my Pokemon card is worth grading?

Compare the PSA 10 market value to the raw (ungraded) price. If the PSA 10 is at least 2x the raw price and above $50, the math generally works after grading fees. Then check your card's physical condition before paying any fee. Our free AI grader can check centering and surface in 30 seconds. How much does it cost to grade a Pokemon card?

PSA charges $25 per card at Value tier (up to 45 days) and $50 at Regular tier (up to 20 days). BGS and CGC have similar base rates. Express tiers can run $100 or more per card. For most modern cards, Value tier is the right comparison point when running the numbers. See the full breakdown: PSA grading cost guide.

What is a grade multiplier?

The grade multiplier is PSA 10 price divided by the raw price. A 2x multiplier means a graded PSA 10 copy sells for twice what an ungraded copy sells for. Cards with multipliers above 2x and PSA 10 values above $50 are the strongest candidates for professional grading.

Should I use PSA, BGS, or CGC?

PSA has the highest resale premium and market liquidity for Pokemon cards. BGS is preferred by some collectors for its sub-grades and slab presentation. CGC is a lower-cost alternative with faster turnaround times. For maximum resale value on high-end cards, PSA is the most widely accepted option among Pokemon collectors.
