How the Centering Tool Works

Get your card's exact centering measurements in three steps. No ruler, no guessing - just precise AI analysis from a photo.

1

Photograph Your Card

Take a straight-on photo of your card on a plain background. Keep the card flat and make sure all four borders are fully visible.

2

AI Measures the Borders

The AI detects the card edges and measures the border width on all four sides with sub-pixel precision, calculating left-right and top-bottom ratios.

3

Get Your Centering Ratio

See the exact centering ratio, whether it passes PSA 10/9 standards, and get a full grade prediction with sub-grades for corners, edges, and surface too.

PSA Centering Standards

PSA measures centering as the ratio between opposite borders. A perfectly centered card is 50/50 on all sides. Here is what each grade requires.

PSA Grade Front Centering Back Centering
PSA 10 (Gem Mint) 60/40 or better 75/25 or better
PSA 9 (Mint) 65/35 or better 90/10 or better
PSA 8 (Near Mint) 70/30 or better No specific requirement
PSA 7 (Near Mint) 75/25 or better No specific requirement

Key point: Centering is measured on both the front and back of the card. A card can have perfect front centering but poor back centering, which still limits the grade. PSA is more lenient on back centering (75/25 for a 10) because the back design is uniform and off-centering is less visually obvious.

Understanding Centering Ratios

Centering ratios compare the border width on opposite sides of a card. Here is how to read them.

50/50

Perfect Centering

Equal borders on all sides. Extremely rare and highly desirable for premium grades.

55/45

Excellent Centering

Slightly off-center but well within PSA 10 standards. Most collectors consider this very good.

60/40

PSA 10 Threshold

The maximum acceptable off-centering for a PSA 10 on the front. Noticeably off-center but still within tolerance.

65/35

PSA 9 Threshold

Clearly off-center. Limits the card to PSA 9 at best for front centering, regardless of other criteria.

Centering is just one of four criteria. Learn about all four in our AI card grader guide, or read the full PSA grading standards.

Why Centering Matters

Centering is often the single factor that prevents an otherwise perfect card from getting a PSA 10. Here is why it deserves your attention.

It cannot be fixed

Unlike surface scratches or edge wear, centering is a factory defect that is permanent. You can protect a card's corners and edges with proper storage, but you cannot fix off-centering. This makes checking centering before buying or grading especially important.

It limits the maximum grade

A card with 65/35 front centering cannot receive higher than a PSA 9, regardless of how perfect the corners, edges, and surface are. Centering acts as a hard ceiling on the grade, making it the first thing to check before submitting to a grading company.

PSA 10 vs PSA 9 price gap

The price difference between a PSA 10 and PSA 9 can be 2-5x or more on popular cards. If centering is the only thing holding your card back from a PSA 10, knowing that in advance saves you from paying $35+ for a grade that will be capped at a 9. Use the value checker to see the exact price difference for your specific card.

Hard to judge by eye

The human eye is poor at judging small differences in border width. A card that looks centered might actually be 62/38 - just barely outside PSA 10 range. AI measurement removes this guesswork by providing exact ratios instead of visual estimates.

Tips for Accurate Centering Measurement

The AI needs a clean, straight-on photo to measure centering accurately. Follow these tips for the most reliable results.

Shoot straight down

Hold your phone directly above the card, not at an angle. Any tilt distorts the border proportions and throws off the measurement.

Keep the card flat

Place the card on a flat surface. Warped or curved cards will produce inaccurate border measurements.

Use a contrasting background

A dark background works best for most Pokemon cards. The AI needs to clearly detect where the card edges are.

Remove from sleeve or toploader

Sleeves and holders can add reflections or shift the card inside the sleeve, affecting the visible border widths. Photograph the raw card if possible.

Pokemon Card Centering FAQ

Common questions about checking Pokemon card centering, PSA standards, and how centering affects card grades and values.

How do I check my Pokemon card centering?

Upload a photo of your Pokemon card to CardGrading.app and the AI measures the border widths on all four sides of both the front and back. It calculates the exact centering ratio (e.g., 55/45 left-right, 52/48 top-bottom) and tells you whether the centering meets PSA 10, PSA 9, or lower standards. The entire process takes under 30 seconds from your phone.

What centering do you need for a PSA 10?

PSA requires centering no worse than 60/40 on the front and 75/25 on the back for a PSA 10 (Gem Mint). This means the borders can be slightly off-center but not dramatically so. For a PSA 9, the standard is 65/35 front and 90/10 back. Cards with perfect 50/50 centering on all sides are rare and highly desirable. Our centering tool shows you the exact ratios so you know precisely where your card stands.

How do you measure Pokemon card centering?

Card centering is measured by comparing the border widths on opposite sides. For left-right centering, you compare the left border to the right border and express it as a ratio. For example, if the left border is 3mm and the right border is 2mm, that is 60/40 centering. The same measurement is done for top-bottom. CardGrading.app does this automatically by analyzing your photo with AI, measuring borders at sub-pixel precision.

Can I use this centering tool on my phone?

Yes. CardGrading.app is a web app that works on any phone with a camera. Open it in your browser, take a photo of your card, and get centering measurements in seconds. No app download required. For best results, photograph the card flat on a plain background with even lighting so the borders are clearly visible.

Does centering affect the value of my Pokemon card?

Centering has a significant impact on value because it is one of the four criteria PSA uses to determine the overall grade. A card with perfect centering that could grade PSA 10 might be worth 3-10x more than the same card at PSA 9 due to off-centering. Even a slight centering issue that drops a card from PSA 10 to PSA 9 can mean hundreds or thousands of dollars in lost value on high-demand cards. Use our pokemon card value checker to see the price difference between grades for your specific card.

What is the centering standard for BGS and CGC?

BGS (Beckett) requires 50/50 to 55/45 centering for a BGS 10 Pristine, making it stricter than PSA. For a BGS 9.5 Gem Mint, centering can be up to 60/40. CGC uses similar standards to PSA, with 60/40 front and 75/25 back for their top grade. CardGrading.app measures against PSA standards by default, but since it shows exact ratios, you can easily compare against any company's requirements.

Why is my Pokemon card off-center?

Off-center cards are caused by misalignment during the printing and cutting process at the factory. The card sheet shifts slightly before the cutting die comes down, resulting in uneven borders. This is a manufacturing defect, not something that happens over time. Modern Pokemon cards from recent sets tend to have better centering than vintage cards, but off-center cards still occur in every print run. There is nothing you can do to fix centering after the fact.
