Pre-Screening Sports Cards in 2026: Basketball, Baseball, Football & Hockey
How to check basketball, baseball, football, and hockey cards before paying to grade them: centering, corners, edges, surface, and which grading company fits. CardGrading.app grades basketball, baseball and football cards, not hockey.
CardGrading.app now grades and appraises basketball, baseball and football cards; it does not support hockey cards (one scanned today gets a condition read only, and it still uses a grade). Sports cards are in beta: grades aren't yet checked against PSA-graded cards. This guide covers what to check on any sports card: the four things graders check, how to pre-screen each one yourself, and which grading company fits.
Sports card collectors face the same core problem as Pokemon collectors: you cannot tell from a casual look whether a Prizm rookie is sitting at 56/44 centering or 62/38. That 6% difference is the gap between a PSA 10 and a PSA 9 on most Panini products — and on a Luka Doncic Prizm base rookie, that gap is worth more than $1,000. A ruler or centering overlay gives you that measurement in a minute, before you spend $35 and six weeks finding out.
What Graders Check on Sports Cards
- Centering: Measure front and back with a ruler or a centering overlay. For Panini Prizm and Chrome products where centering variance off the press can be significant, measure borderline cards carefully: 57/43 is in the PSA 10 window; 63/37 is a PSA 9 ceiling on almost all cards.
- Corners: Whitening and dings, checked under a loupe. Corner wear on Prizm is often the second-most common PSA 10 killer after centering.
- Edges: Chipping and roughness. More relevant for vintage cards (1980s-90s Topps, Upper Deck) than modern chrome products.
- Surface: Scratches and print defects. Foil cards (Prizm, Chrome, Select) show surface handling damage under angled light that looks clean from directly overhead — tilt the card slowly under a lamp to see it.
- Market prices: Look up recent sold prices for the raw card, PSA 9, and PSA 10 side by side, so you see the submission ROI math before you decide.
Basketball Cards: Where a Pre-Screen Earns Its Keep
Modern NBA grading is dominated by Panini Prizm, Select, and Mosaic. Every one of these products has significant centering variance from the factory. A 2018-19 Prizm base Luka Doncic in a pack looks fine to the naked eye — but whether it is at 56/44 or 63/37 completely changes the submission decision.
PSA 10 premiums on active star basketball rookies:
| Card | Raw (~NM) | PSA 9 | PSA 10 | PSA 10 premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luka Doncic 2018-19 Prizm Base RC | ~$80 | ~$400-500 | ~$1,800+ | ~22x raw |
| Ja Morant 2019-20 Prizm Base RC | ~$50 | ~$250-350 | ~$900 | ~18x raw |
| Victor Wembanyama 2023-24 Prizm Base RC | ~$60 | ~$150 | ~$400+ | ~7x raw |
At these spreads, grading a borderline card and getting back a 9 instead of a 10 costs $1,000-$1,300 in missed value — many times the PSA fee. A careful pre-screen changes this from a gamble to a measured decision.
Baseball Cards: Topps Chrome and Vintage
Modern baseball grading centers on Topps Chrome and Bowman Chrome. Chromium stock has the same centering variance as basketball Prizm and the same foil surface that shows handling scratches under angled light. A Shohei Ohtani 2018 Topps Chrome rookie PSA 10 sells for $400+; the same card at PSA 8 is worth $30-40.
Vintage baseball is a different calculation. Condition problems on a 1952 Topps are visible to the eye. A careful pre-screen earns its keep in the modern chromium segment where cards look fine casually but fail PSA 10 on sub-grade issues that require measurement.
Football Cards: Prizm Centering and Patch Alignment
Panini Prizm football has identical factory centering characteristics to basketball Prizm — the same print runs, same chromium stock, same variance. Mahomes, Burrow, and Justin Jefferson Prizm rookies in near-mint condition frequently sit at borderline centering. Knowing the exact number before submitting saves the fee on the copies that don't qualify.
National Treasures and similar patch products add one more variable: whether the patch itself is straight in the window. Measure the card's printed borders, not the patch, when you check centering.
Hockey Cards: Upper Deck and Beyond
The hockey card market is smaller than basketball or baseball but growing. Upper Deck products — including Connor McDavid, Wayne Gretzky, and Mario Lemieux cards — are graded by PSA on the same four criteria as every other sport, so the same manual centering and condition check applies.
How to Pre-Screen a Sports Card Accurately
Lighting matters most for sports cards
Prizm and Chrome cards have reflective foil surfaces that catch light at angles a direct overhead photo misses. Hold a lamp at roughly 45 degrees to the card and tilt it slowly. Surface scratches that are invisible in flat lighting will appear at that angle — and that is what a PSA grader sees under their lamp.
Use centering as a filter, not a guarantee
If a card measures 58/42, it is in the PSA 10 window — a good candidate to submit — though PSA graders carry some human variance. A 64/36 is almost certainly a PSA 9 ceiling on any modern product. Use centering to make the submit/skip decision, not to predict the exact grade with certainty.
Check the market spread before committing borderline cards
Look up recent sold prices for the raw card, PSA 9, and PSA 10 before you submit. If you have a borderline centering card and the PSA 10 vs PSA 9 spread is $800, the gamble has positive expected value. If the spread is $15, it does not. Both pieces of information — your condition check and the market spread — need to inform the submission decision.
PSA vs BGS vs CGC: Which Company for Sports Cards?
| Company | Cheapest Tier | Regular Tier | Turnaround | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PSA | $19 Value | $35 Regular | 65 / 30 days | NBA, MLB, NFL resale — highest premiums |
| BGS | $25 Standard | $50 Express | 20-30 / 5-10 days | Black Label chase on pristine copies |
| CGC | $15 Economy | $30 Standard | 80 / 50 days | Personal collection, lower-value cards |
| SGC | $20 Economy | $40 Premium | 45 / 15 days | Vintage basketball and baseball |
PSA dominates resale premiums for modern sports cards across all major sports. BGS has a specific use case for collectors chasing the BGS Black Label 10 (sub-grades must all be 10). CGC and SGC are cheaper options where resale premium is less important.
Check condition by hand before deciding. A few minutes with a ruler, a loupe, and angled light costs nothing and tells you which cards are worth those fees.
What is the best AI sports card grading app?
CardGrading.app grades and appraises basketball, baseball and football cards: a grade estimate plus market figures from completed sales of that exact card and version when our market data has them. It does not support hockey cards: one scanned today gets a condition read only, and it still uses a grade. Sports cards are in beta: grades aren't yet checked against PSA-graded cards. A careful manual check is still worth doing: measure centering with a ruler or overlay, check corners and edges under a loupe, and inspect the surface under angled light.
Can AI accurately grade sports cards?
Sports cards are in beta: grades aren't yet checked against PSA-graded cards. We do not publish an accuracy figure for sports cards. For any photo-based check, the main limitation is surface detection for scratches that only appear under angled light. For sports cards, centering is often the deciding factor for PSA 10 on modern Prizm and Chrome products, and it is the easiest criterion to measure yourself.
Is there a free AI sports card grading app?
CardGrading.app grades basketball, baseball and football cards from photos, with market figures from completed sales of that exact card and version when our market data has them. A manual pre-screen costs nothing: a ruler or centering overlay, a loupe, and angled light.
What sports cards are worth submitting to PSA?
The strongest submission candidates are modern star rookie cards where the PSA 10 premium significantly exceeds the grading fee: Prizm basketball (Luka, Wembanyama), Topps Chrome baseball (Ohtani, Soto), Prizm football (Mahomes, Jefferson), and Upper Deck hockey (McDavid, Gretzky). A careful manual pre-screen helps you identify which copies from your collection are actually in PSA 10 condition before paying the submission fee.
What CardGrading grades
CardGrading now grades and appraises baseball, football and basketball cards.
Scan your card and you get a grade estimate, plus market figures from completed sales of that exact card and version when our market data has them. When there are enough recent sales at the estimated PSA grade, the app answers worth submitting or not worth submitting. When there are not, it says more market data is needed instead of guessing. It may first ask which set or which version (parallel) your card is.
Sports cards are in beta: grades aren't yet checked against PSA-graded cards. CardGrading is not affiliated with PSA.
Soccer and hockey cards, and trading card games other than Pokémon, are not supported. If you scan one, you get a condition read only (no value, no submit advice), and it still uses a grade.
