Best Pokémon Cards to Grade for Profit (2025 Guide)

Not every card is worth grading. Here's how to identify which Pokémon cards have the biggest PSA 10 premium — and which ones to skip.

Best Pokémon Cards to Grade for Profit (2025 Guide)

Grading a card costs money and takes time. The math only works when the PSA 10 premium is big enough to clear the submission fee and then some. Here's how to think about which cards are worth sending — and which aren't.

The Core Rule: Check the PSA 10 Premium First

Before grading anything, look up the card on eBay (sold listings, not asking prices) and note:

  • Raw (ungraded) price
  • PSA 9 price
  • PSA 10 price

The PSA 10 premium needs to exceed the grading fee by a comfortable margin. At PSA's economy tier (~$20-25/card), you need to be confident the card will grade well and sell for meaningfully more than the raw price.

Vintage Cards (Pre-2003)

Vintage cards have the highest PSA 10 premiums because mint examples are genuinely rare — these cards were played with, not preserved.

Base Set Charizard

The benchmark. An Unlimited Base Set Charizard raw is worth ~$150-300 depending on condition. PSA 10: $3,000-5,000. Shadowless is far rarer — PSA 10 Shadowless Charizard has sold for $30,000+.

Worth grading if: the card appears mint and you're confident in the corners and centering.

Base Set Blastoise and Venusaur

Less iconic than Charizard but strong PSA 10 premiums. Base Set Blastoise PSA 10 runs $800-1,200 vs $50-100 raw.

1st Edition Base Set cards

The 1st Edition stamp adds significant value to any Base Set card. Even common 1st Edition cards can be worth grading if they appear mint.

Neo Genesis Lugia

One of the most desirable vintage holos outside Base Set. PSA 10 commands 5-10x the raw price.

Modern Cards Worth Grading (2020–Present)

Modern cards have tighter print quality, making PSA 10s more achievable — but also more common. Focus on high-value pulls where the PSA 10 premium is still strong.

Special Illustration Rares and Alt Arts

Cards like Charizard ex (Obsidian Flames Special Illustration Rare), Gardevoir ex SIR, and Umbreon VMAX Alternate Art have PSA 10 premiums of 3-5x. These cards are printed in limited quantities relative to demand.

Rainbow Rares on chase cards

Pikachu VMAX Rainbow (Vivid Voltage) PSA 10: ~$120 vs $40 raw. Charizard V Rainbow (Shining Fates) PSA 10: ~$200 vs $60 raw.

Gold cards

Gold Secret Rares on high-demand Pokémon — Charizard, Pikachu, Umbreon — often have strong PSA 10 premiums because their textured surface picks up fingerprints and scratches easily.

Cards That Rarely Make Sense to Grade

  • Common and uncommon cards — raw value is too low. Even a PSA 10 common might be worth $5.
  • Low-demand rares — if nobody's searching for the card, the graded market is illiquid. Hard to sell even at a fair price.
  • Modern V and VMAX bulk rares — print run is too large. PSA 10s are common and the premium is minimal.
  • Cards in clearly poor condition — grading confirms damage, it doesn't fix it. A PSA 6 often sells for less than raw.

How to Screen Cards Before Submitting

The fastest workflow:

  1. Use CardGrading.app to get an AI grade estimate (free for your first card)
  2. If the estimate is 8+, look up the PSA 9 and PSA 10 prices on eBay sold listings
  3. If PSA 10 price minus submission fee is more than 2x the raw card value, submit
  4. If not, save the fee and sell raw

This screen catches the most common mistake: submitting cards that look good but won't clear the fee hurdle even at PSA 10.

The Centering Trap

Centering is a common reason mint-looking cards miss PSA 10. A card can have perfect corners and surface but grade 8 because the borders are 68/32 instead of 60/40. Always check centering first — it's the easiest thing to assess and the most common deal-breaker.

CardGrading.app gives a centering score as a first read; measure borderline cards before you submit.
