Sports Card Grading in 2026: How to Pre-Screen Basketball, Baseball & Football Cards
What to check before paying to grade basketball, baseball, and football cards: centering, corners, edges, surface, and what PSA, BGS, CGC, and SGC cost. CardGrading.app grades Pokemon cards today, not sports cards yet.
CardGrading.app grades Pokémon cards today; it does not grade sports cards yet (support is planned, with no date set). This guide covers what does work for basketball, baseball, and football cards right now: the four things graders check, how to pre-screen each one yourself, and what professional grading costs.
Sending a card to PSA and getting back a grade lower than you expected is an expensive lesson. You paid the fee, waited six weeks, and now you own a PSA 8 that sells for half what the raw card was worth. The submission was probably a mistake from the start - you just had no way to know that before you shipped it.
A careful pre-screen solves most of this. Not "is this card in good condition" (you can see that yourself), but "will this specific card hit a PSA 10 or am I wasting $35 finding out the hard way." For basketball, baseball, and football cards where the PSA 10 premium on star rookies can be 10-40x the raw price, getting that call right before you submit is worth real money.
What Graders Check on Sports Cards
PSA, BGS, SGC, and CGC all grade on the same four criteria. Check each one yourself before you pay to submit.
- Centering: Measure front and back with a ruler or a centering overlay. This is where most modern Prizm and Chrome cards lose their PSA 10 - 55/45 is usually fine, 60/40 usually is not, and you will not know which one you have without measuring.
- Corners: Whitening, dings, and sharpness. Corner wear on a Luka Prizm rookie is often the difference between an $800 PSA 10 and a $350 PSA 9.
- Edges: Chipping and roughness along all four sides.
- Surface: Scratches and print defects. Foil stock on Prizm and Chrome shows handling damage that looks fine under normal light but stands out under a grader's lamp.
Pre-Screening Basketball Cards
Basketball is the biggest non-Pokemon grading market, and PSA dominates NBA card resale. A Luka Doncic 2018-19 Prizm base rookie PSA 10 sells for around $1,800. Raw, that card is $80. A Ja Morant 2019-20 Prizm PSA 10 is $900 on a $50 raw. The multiples are real - grading star rookies makes financial sense when the card is in the right condition.
The problem is Prizm centering. Factory print runs are inconsistently centered, and a lot of base Prizm sits at 60/40 or worse off the line. Looking at a card in hand, you cannot reliably tell whether it is sitting at 57/43 or 62/38. That 5% difference is the PSA 10 vs the PSA 9 on most cards, and on a Luka rookie that gap is $450.
Measure the borders on any Prizm basketball rookie before submitting: a card at 60/40 or worse in either direction is realistically a PSA 9 ceiling - factor that into whether the submission makes financial sense. See our full basketball card grading guide for company comparisons and current fee breakdowns.
Pre-Screening Baseball Cards
Modern baseball grading centers on Topps Chrome and Bowman Chrome. Same chromium stock as basketball Prizm, same centering variance off the printer, same foil surface that shows handling scratches under good light.
A Shohei Ohtani 2018 Topps Chrome rookie PSA 10 sells for $400+. A Juan Soto 2018 Topps Chrome PSA 10 is $150-200. A Julio Rodriguez 2022 Topps Chrome PSA 10 hits $80-120 on a $15 raw card. These are grades where a submission coming back PSA 8 instead of PSA 10 costs you $100-350, far more than the fee.
Vintage baseball is different. Condition problems on a 1952 Topps Mantle are obvious to the eye. A careful pre-screen earns its keep in the modern segment, where cards look fine casually but have centering or surface issues that only matter when a grader has them under a loupe.
Pre-Screening Football Cards
Football grading is growing fast. Mahomes, Burrow, Justin Jefferson - the PSA 10 premiums on active star rookies are real and the submission math often works. Panini Prizm football has the same centering variance as basketball Prizm, and National Treasures patches add the complication of whether the patch is positioned straight in frame for the photo.
Foil football cards need controlled light to photograph well. Surface scratches on foil catch light at an angle your standard overhead shot misses - tilt the card slightly or use a lamp at 45 degrees to catch what a grader will see. If you can see a surface mark on a foil card under angled light, assume a grader will too. See our football card grading guide for submission recommendations by card type.
How to Pre-Screen Accurately
Light matters more than most people think
Surface scratches on foil stock catch light at an angle that a flat overhead view misses entirely. Inspect the card under a bright lamp held at roughly 45 degrees and tilt it slowly. You will catch more surface issues at an angle than from directly above.
Use centering as a decision filter, not a guarantee
If you measure a card at 58/42, it is in the PSA 10 window, not a certainty; PSA graders have some human variance too. A 63/37 is almost always a PSA 9 ceiling regardless. Use centering to make the submit/skip decision, not to predict the exact grade.
Check the market spread before submitting borderline cards
Look up recent sold prices for the card at PSA 9 and PSA 10 before you submit. If the PSA 10 vs PSA 9 spread on a card is $400, submitting a borderline 58/42 card with clean corners is worth the gamble. If the spread is $10, it is not.
What Professional Sports Card Grading Costs
| Company | Cheapest Tier | Regular Tier | Turnaround | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PSA | $19 Value | $35 Regular | 65 / 30 days | Basketball, baseball resale |
| BGS | $25 Standard | $50 Express | 20-30 / 5-10 days | Black Label chase on pristine cards |
| CGC | $15 Economy | $30 Standard | 80 / 50 days | Personal collection, lower-value cards |
| SGC | $20 Economy | $40 Premium | 45 / 15 days | Vintage basketball and baseball |
Add shipping both ways and you are paying $29+ minimum per card even on PSA's cheapest tier. A few minutes with a loupe and a ruler first costs nothing.
What is the best sports card grading app?
CardGrading.app grades Pokémon cards today; it does not grade sports cards yet. Sports card support is planned, with no date set. Until then, the pre-screen to use for basketball, baseball, and football cards is a careful manual check: measure centering with a ruler or overlay, check corners and edges under a loupe, and inspect the surface under angled light.
Is there a free app to grade sports cards?
CardGrading.app does not grade sports cards yet - it is built for Pokémon cards. The free pre-screen that works for sports cards today is manual: a ruler or centering overlay, a loupe, and angled light. That is far cheaper than paying $19-$35 per card to find out the grade the hard way.
Do AI grading apps work for basketball and baseball cards?
CardGrading.app does not grade basketball or baseball cards yet; it is built for Pokémon cards, and sports support is planned with no date set. The grading criteria - centering, corners, edges, surface - are the same ones professional graders apply to sports cards, so a careful manual check of each is the pre-screen to use today.
What sports cards are worth grading?
In basketball: rookie cards of active stars like Luka Doncic, Ja Morant, and LeBron James in NM or better condition, where PSA 10 premiums run 10-40x raw. In baseball: modern Topps Chrome rookies of superstars (Ohtani, Soto) and high-value vintage. In football: Mahomes, Burrow, and Justin Jefferson rookies where the PSA 10 spread justifies the fee. Check condition by hand before paying to submit.
What is the best grading company for basketball cards?
PSA dominates NBA card resale. PSA-slabbed modern basketball consistently sells at a premium over BGS or CGC equivalents. BGS has a niche for genuinely pristine copies chasing the Black Label 10. CGC is the cheapest option at $15/card but carries lower resale premiums. Check the card's condition by hand first, then choose the company based on the card's value and your resale goals.
What CardGrading grades
We grade Pokémon cards today — not sports cards yet.
Our AI grader is built and trained on the Pokémon TCG. It reads centering, corners, edges and surface on Pokémon cards and predicts a PSA-aligned grade. It is not built for sports cards, so we do not ask you to scan one — we would rather tell you than guess.
Support for sports cards is planned. The grading standards on this page — the four criteria, the cost maths, the PSA 10 premiums — are the same ones professional graders apply, and they are worth knowing whichever cards you collect.
