The CGC Grading Scale

CGC uses a 1-10 scale with whole numbers. The top grade is CGC 10 Pristine, reserved for cards with no discernible flaws under magnification. CGC 10 is split into Pristine (standard) and Perfect (extremely rare).

CGC 10 Pristine / Perfect

No visible flaws. Perfect centering, sharp corners, clean edges, flawless surface. The rarest outcome.

CGC 9 Mint

Near perfect with one minor flaw. Slightly off-center or barely visible surface mark. Most pack-fresh modern cards target this.

CGC 8 Near Mint-Mint

Two to four minor flaws, all minor. Light surface marks, very slight corner fraying, slight border misalignment.

CGC 7 Near Mint

Moderate flaws on one or two criteria. Visible corner wear or noticeable surface scratch. Still a clean, presentable card.

CGC 6 and below Excellent and lower

Visible wear across multiple criteria. Cards this low rarely justify the grading cost unless they are valuable vintage cards or low-pop cards where any authentication adds value.

How CGC evaluates each card: CGC graders assess four criteria in order of importance: centering (border symmetry front and back), corners (sharpness and fraying), edges (chipping and whitening), and surface (scratches, print lines, and haze). Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about CGC grading services, cost, and how CGC compares to PSA.

What is CGC grading?

CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) is one of the four major professional card grading companies. Originally known for comic book grading, CGC expanded into trading cards and is now a mainstream option for Pokemon, sports cards, and other collectibles. CGC grades cards on a 1-10 scale and seals them in a tamper-proof slab with a certification number. Optional sub-grades for centering, corners, edges, and surface are available for an additional $10 per card.

How much does CGC grading cost?

CGC grading costs $15 to $250 per card in 2026. Economy is $15/card at roughly 80 days, Standard is $30/card at roughly 50 days, Express is $75/card at roughly 15 days, Super Express is $150/card at roughly 5 days, and Walk-Through is $250/card for same-day service. No annual membership is required.

Does CGC require a membership?

No, CGC does not require a paid annual membership. You create a free account and can submit at any time. This differs from PSA, which requires a $99/year Collectors Club membership. The absence of a membership fee makes CGC cheaper than PSA on a per-submission basis for most collectors.

Is CGC or PSA better for Pokemon cards?

For resale value, PSA is generally better. PSA-graded Pokemon cards command higher prices on eBay and auction houses compared to CGC-graded equivalents. However, CGC is a legitimate and growing option. For personal collections or for collectors who prefer sub-grade data, CGC is an excellent choice. CGC is also cheaper at every tier when you factor in PSA's $99 membership.

Does CGC give sub-grades?

CGC sub-grades are optional at an extra $10 per card. Sub-grades cover centering, corners, edges, and surface. This contrasts with BGS, where sub-grades are included at no extra cost. If detailed sub-grade data is important for every card, BGS may be more cost-effective. CGC sub-grades use the same 1-10 scale as the overall grade.
