Beckett Grading System Guide 2026

Beckett operates three distinct grading tiers: BGS (flagship with sub-grades), BCCG (budget entry-level), and BVG (vintage cards pre-1980). BGS is the standard for serious collectors. BCCG carries lower premiums and is designed for bulk or lower-value submissions. BVG applies era-appropriate standards for vintage material. Most resale-focused collectors should use BGS.

BGS: The Flagship Service

BGS is Beckett's primary grading service and the one that matters for resale. Cards graded under BGS receive an overall grade from 1 to 10 in 0.5 increments, plus four individual sub-grades for centering, corners, edges, and surface. Sub-grades are printed on the label inside the slab, visible without breaking the seal.

The top of the BGS scale is BGS 10 Pristine, and the rare Black Label designation is awarded when all four sub-grades are exactly 10. Black Label 10s are among the most sought-after grades in the hobby and can command prices significantly above PSA 10 on the same card.

BGS Standard tier requires a minimum of 10 cards per submission. This makes BGS less convenient for submitting a single valuable card compared to PSA, where you can submit one card at a time. However, batch submissions also spread your shipping costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Beckett grading system.

What is the Beckett grading system?

Beckett offers three grading tiers: BGS (Beckett Grading Services) is the flagship service with sub-grades on a 0.5-increment scale, BCCG (Beckett Collector's Club Grading) is a budget entry-level service for lower-value cards, and BVG (Beckett Vintage Grading) is specialized for pre-1980 cards. BGS is by far the most recognized and carries the highest market premium of the three.

What is the difference between BGS and BCCG?

BGS (Beckett Grading Services) uses a 0.5-increment scale with four detailed sub-grades and is the premium Beckett product. BCCG (Beckett Collector's Club Grading) is a simplified grading service that uses whole numbers only, does not include sub-grades, and costs less. BCCG grades carry significantly lower market premiums than BGS. Collectors who plan to sell should use BGS, not BCCG.

What is BVG grading?

BVG (Beckett Vintage Grading) is Beckett's specialized service for cards printed before 1980. BVG uses the same sub-grade system as BGS but applies era-appropriate standards for vintage cardboard stock, centering tolerances, and surface conditions. Vintage cards graded under BGS or BVG often carry strong premiums for pre-war and 1950s-1970s sports cards.

Does Beckett require a minimum submission?

BGS Standard tier requires a minimum of 10 cards per submission. Higher tiers (Express and above) may allow smaller minimums. BCCG also has minimum submission requirements. Check the current Beckett website for exact minimums as they can change. Most experienced collectors batch cards to meet the minimum and take advantage of single shipping costs across multiple cards.

Is BGS or PSA better for resale value?

PSA generally commands higher resale premiums than BGS for mainstream modern cards. However, BGS 9.5 Gem Mint can match PSA 10 values on certain cards, and BGS Black Label 10 often exceeds PSA 10 prices due to its extreme rarity. BGS has an advantage for collectors who value detailed sub-grade information and do not require an annual membership fee. For straightforward resale, PSA is typically the better choice.
